Juuni Taisen (十二大戦, “12 Wars”) is an anime adaptation from the Japanese light novel written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Hikaru Nakamura. The novel was published by Shueisha on May 19, 2015. It is a prequel to their one-shot manga titled Dōshitemo Kanaetai Tatta Hitotsu no Negai to Wari to Sō demo Nai 99 no Negai (どうしても叶えたいたったひとつの願いと割とそうでもない99の願い) published on January 9, 2015. The novel is licensed by Viz Media, who released an English translation in October 2017.
Juuni Taisen is one of this season’s most watch anime. Well, I recommend it. The animation is somewhat general, not too good and not too bad. The anime is produced by Graphinica with Naoto Hosoda directing, Sadayuki Murai writing scripts, Chikashi Kadekaru designing characters, and Go Shiinacomposing the music. The opening theme is “Rapture” by Panorama Panama Town, while the ending theme is “Keshin no Kemono” (化身の獣) by Do as Infinity. Like it said the title, it will run for 12 episodes with probably each character to die in every episode. Well, it’s a war.
The manga adaptation by Akira Akatsuki has been announced and was serialized in Shueisha‘s Shōnen Jump+ app and website on September 23, 2017. So, they pretty much want to make it big this season. Let me say, the character design is quite cool. The Usagi reminds me of Tokyo Ghoul. Maybe because of the blacked eyes with red pupils.
The story starts in a city of 500.000 people who have all been removed by the power of Juuni Taisen organization. 12 warriors, one of each Chinese zodiac animals, (you can say they are the deadliest mercenary/warriors) must compete in Juuni Taisen Tournament which takes place every 12 years. The concept is a war that each year is represented by one warrior.
For this Juuni Taisen the rules are:
1. Each warrior must swallow a poisonous gem, which will begin to kill them after 12 hours. The gem only reacts to stomach acid and is indestructible otherwise.
2. The winner will be granted any one wish. Like dragon balls.
3. The winner must retrieve all the gems from the other competitors before the deadline. You can say there will be a lot of gut slitting.
There’s a lot of plot twist and unpredictable moves that makes this anime so exciting. However, it’s more like a strategy and quick kills. There’s quite some action but, don’t expect it to be as much as One Piece, Dragon Ball, or Naruto. Remember, this is a 12 episodes anime.
It’s good while it lasted.
